THE TORAJALAND (TANAH TORAJA) IN THE ISLAND OF CELEBES (SULAWESI)

The Toraja Country has been blessed with an extraordinary beauty where traditional villages are built in the middle of picturesque rice fields flanked by beautiful hills and mountains. Up to this day the Torajan people continue to maintain the ancient customs of their ancestors. They build their traditional Tongkonan style rice barns and houses in the form of saddled boats or buffaloes as a vehicle to send the spirit to the heaven. The dead members of the family will be buried inside tombs dug in the cliff rocks or inside of the megalithic stones, followed by spectacular funeral rites in which dozens of buffaloes and hundreds of pigs will be sacrificed in honor of the dead and to entertain the honorary guests and relatives. It is not surprising then that the number of buffalo’s horns placed in front of their traditional houses is the measure of the wealth of the family. Come and discover this exotic land and unique culture with our wonderful trips!
