THE PERFORMANCE OF THE SHADOW PUPPET OR WAYANG

Come with us to attend the most preferred show for the Balinese, the Wayang Kulit or the shadow puppet play! People of all time and of all ages are fascinated by this world of ancient heroes and ancestors.

The shadow puppet play is like the first school for the community. In it the people learn everything: the history, the philosophy of life, humor, love, religious teachings, traditions and at the same time they have lots of fun. The theater’s actor called Dalang is actually the real hero. He remembers at least 100 different stories or more to avoid repeating the same story in the performance; he speaks at least four different languages because the heroes speak the ancient language called Kawi which then translated by the clowns to the current Balinese in low, middle or high Balinese languages. He is also the leader of the musicians, with good endurance because the dalang has to sit down at least two or three hours during the performance. He also has the power to bless the water to become holy water, a power that normally is only reserved for a priest. The spectators sit down patiently waiting for the jokes and critics related to the actual events or news from the clowns which will both educate and entertain them very much.
